Liverpool hope that their transfer target would force through move to Anfield

Liverpool is still hopeful of signing Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk.

The Dutchman is the Reds main defensive target this summer ahead of a return to the UEFA Champions League. Their interest in the defender has somewhat died down in the last couple of weeks after the Saints reported them to the Premier League for tapping up the player.

However, they are still very much in the running for his signature and the player also remains keen to move to Anfield. Van Dijk has repeatedly stated his desire to join Liverpool, even claiming the Reds are the only other team he wants to play for, but Southampton, who have placed a £60 million price tag on his head, believe no club would meet that valuation and he would remain with them this season.

The Saints might be forced to reduce that amount if the Dutch defender hands in an official transfer request and demands to leave at all cost.

For now, Liverpool is focused on signing RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita despite also facing difficulty in their chase of the Guinean.

Van Dijk missed a large part of last season, and only returned to full fitness recently, but he is still regarded as one of the best defenders in the division.
